Thera, John “Jack”

Born May 1, 1949 to John Martin Thera and Carol Ann Frautschi in St. Paul, MN. He attended St. Paul Academy through high school and then he headed to the University of Montana at Bozeman where he studied mechanical engineering and aeronautical engineering, graduating in June 1971 summa cum laude. He was hired by Texaco and moved to Craig, CO, where he soon met and married Sue Pannetier, the love of his life. Before long they were transferred to Saudi Arabia to work for Aramco, the world’s largest oil company and began their great adventure. They travelled the world, enjoying all the sights and sounds for seven years before returning to Denver, CO where Jack worked for Occidental Petroleum. They loved Colorado and all its beauty but seven years later they were off again to the Sultanate of Oman, a small oil-rich country in the Mideast. Jack and Sue loved Oman with its friendly people and beautiful sights. Jack worked hard for Occidental and became an expert in horizontal drilling, where he held several world records.  After visiting over 50 different countries while overseas, they returned to Minnesota in 1997 to make their home and spend time with Jack’s mom, Carol, before she passed away in December 2000. Jack returned to the Mideast working 28 days on then 28 days back in Minnesota. He did stints in Oman, Qatar and even Norway before returning home for good in 2005. Jack and Sue decided to train their dogs as therapy dogs, taking them to nursing homes, schools and hospitals, never missing their Monday outings. Sharing their dogs brought them great love and joy as well as bringing happiness to all they visited.  Jack also loved breakfast with the boys on Tuesday mornings and working in the woods battling burdock and buckthorn. Besides Jack’s beloved wife of nearly 48 years and his dog Jaycee, he leaves behind two nephews, Dave and Robo, as well as many cousins, great neighbors and friends. In addition to his parents, he is pre-deceased by his dogs Mickey, Grizzley, Sunny, Jazzi and Mandy. A celebration of Jack’s life will be held at a later date.

Juers, Edward H., Jr.

Ed, age 84, of Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota

Died peacefully on March 23, 2021, from complications of a stroke. Ed was born in Red Wing, Minnesota on November 7, 1936.

While Ed’s father Dr. Edward Juers served in WWII, Ed spent his early youth with his mother Meredith, and siblings Joan and John moving from California to Kansas, Colorado and Seattle. He attended eight elementary schools in four years, and this early experience in life, he thought, paved the way for him to easily make new friends. After returning to Red Wing, Ed grew up fishing, duck hunting and water skiing on the Mississippi River. He and his “River Rat” buddies made their first water skis in the basement if his parent’s home. Ed was a scholar, an athlete, loved music, and was especially proud of starting the first Red Wing High School golf team with his buddy Peter Ullrich.

Ed’s first year of college was spent at the University of Arizona, but after meeting his future wife, Carol (Burgess), he transferred back to Minnesota and graduated from Carleton College. Ed obtained his master’s degree from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and worked toward a PhD at UC/Berkeley where he studied criminology and sociology.

While Ed’s first memory of a job was working for an elderly man delivering vegetables in Colorado Springs at 8 yrs old, he officially began his professional career alongside future lifelong friend Orville Pung at the Minnesota Correctional facility for juvenile offenders in Red Wing. He later worked in the Goodhue County Court system, and moved on to play a key role in starting the Criminal Justice Program at Inver Hills Community College, where he taught until retirement. Ed and Carol had an amazing network of close friends throughout their lifetime. The Pung’s, Gilmer’s, Vanstone’s, Goering’s and Sickle’s shared many wonderful times together. Ed loved singing songs and playing banjo, deer camp, and time spent at the cabin with close friends and family. More recently, Ed formed a very special friendship with Elizabeth Brooks, another Red Wing native.

Ed was preceded in death by his wife Carol and daughter Kelly (Joe) Schmidt, his Father, Mother, Sister Joan and Brother John. He is survived by his daughter Karin (Dave) Detienne and son EJ (Amy) Juers. Ed’s pride and joy were his grandchildren Chris (Emily) Schmidt, Katie (Charlie) Dahl, Erin (fiancé Sean) Schmidt, Nick Butler (Sig. other Christina Jackson), Connor and Carli Detienne; Jacob, Jordan and Olivia Juers; and great-grandchildren Kylie, Liam, Bradlie and Lacy.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, May 22, 2021, at Roberts Funeral Home in Inver Grove Heights. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service, and a luncheon will follow the service at the home of EJ and Amy Juers in Inver Grove Heights.
