Stockburger, George Sr.

It is with great sadness that the family announces the death of George Stockburger, on January 7th, 2021 at age 73.

George grew up in South St. Paul and graduated high school in 1965. He went on to St. Cloud State University and graduated with degrees in chemistry and biology. During college he went back to a high school dance and was introduced to his future wife Debbi (O’Tool) Stockburger. They married in 1970.

The food industry is where George’s career took place. Beginning at Armour’s, George developed an appreciation for food services. He joined Byerly’s commissary when it was just starting out and resulted in him managing the commissary, bakery and drivers. The wild rice soup was and still is a family favorite. George then took his management skills to Captain Ken’s as CEO.

Fishing and hunting were George’s true loves. Early on he produced homemade fishing lures and jigs as co-founder of Cobra Tackle. Later he opened a sporting goods store, Minks Sports. George looked forward to his annual bow hunting trips to Whitewater State Park in Winona as well as trips with friends to Wisconsin, Montana, Colorado, Alaska and Canada.

It was important to George to help others enjoy hunting. He did this by teaching gun safety for over 35 years.  He also served on the Board of the local South St Paul Gun Club as Vice President. He continued to shoot at the gun club long after his retirement. George’s love of hunting and fishing was passed down to his sons.

During retirement you could always find George tinkering with something and continued to test recipes and can – especially tomato juice and peppers (yes – there were hot). A few years ago, he got a new job – grandpa! He loved it.

George was predeceased by his mother and father George and Mary ‘Bunny’ Stockburger. George is survived by wife Deborah, sons George Stockburger Jr. and Garrett [wife Annie, grandsons Colin, and Bodie] Stockburger, brothers Mark [Darla] Stockburger, and Jim [Barb] Stockburger, and sister Jane [Chris] Mattson.

A memorial service is being planned for the summer.

Elroy (age 94) was a man of integrity and lived a life of giving.  He passed away in the home he built himself.   He was dearly loved by his family and friends.

Elroy was born to Florence (Sachs) and Louis Rechtzigel.  He went to Rosemount schools and received a technical college degree.   He worked hard on the family farm.  He was baptized, confirmed and married at Emanuel Lutheran (later named Crown of Life Church).   He met the love of his life (Evelyn Dahm) in church choir.  They married August 17, 1945 and were newlyweds for 64 years.  He was active in his church his entire life and supported Christian education. He helped visit people who needed to hear about the Lord’s love, he fixed things at the church and was a leader in the congregation.

His love for airplanes led him to get his private pilot’s license and work at North Central Airlines.  He built and flew radio control airplanes and was part of Tri Valley R/V.  He loved attending airshows including Oshkosh EAA.  He and Evelyn traveled in their motor home in later years; Myrtle Beach being their favorite.   Elroy’s employment varied until he was able to achieve his dream of running his own motor repair shop. Rex Electric and later Elroy’s Service.   He spent many years helping others with motor problems, so much so he was the WCCO good neighbor for a day.  His family would say “Papa can fix it” whenever things broke.    He ran his business and fixed motors with Sheldon Sachs and later brought his grandson Andrew Taylor into the business to carry on.  He called them his boys.  Andrew will continue running the business from a new location.  Elroy went to his shop and worked almost every day until 1 month before his death.  His strong faith and relationship with God led him to send his girls to Christian schools.  He continued supporting Christian education for the rest of his life.    Elroy’s life was full of giving and serving others as a result of his faith.   He loved his family and sacrificed to help them always.

He is proceeded in death by his beloved wife Evelyn; his grandson Wade Rusty Rustad, his son in law Ken (Corky) Rustad, his brother Louis Rechtzigel.

He will be dearly missed by his daughters Kathleen (Ralph) Taylor, Gail Rustad and LuAnn Olen.  Each daughter played a significant role in his life.  Kathy dropped in, reminisced with him and left the place clean as a whistle.  Gail traveled from WI, made delicious meals for him to heat up and called him nightly. LuAnn played cards with him, brought ice cream and had great conversations on the patio.  They each did many tasks around the house to make sure he was safe and taken care of in his home until the end.

He leaves 6 grandchildren, 8 Great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren, His loyal friend Sheldon Sachs and his motor shop friends.  He will also leave Ben the cat who was his special friend after Evelyn passed away.  He is also survived by his sister Auverne (Bob) Raatz, sister in law Carol Rechtzigel and nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren.

Bob was born in St Paul, MN and graduated from South St. Paul High School.  It was in So. St. Paul where he chose to live and raise his sons.  He was very involved in the SSP youth hockey program and enjoyed watching and coaching his sons. He frequented the Minnesota High School hockey tournament every year.

Bob started a family business venture, which took him back to his family roots in farming. He started Zywiec’s Garden Center in Cottage Grove, MN in 1982. This work allowed Bob to be creative, having customers frequently request that he, himself, build their planter of choice. Bob was a very quiet man with a work ethic like no other, which stayed with him until his final breath.  Planting and gardening was his greatest passion, you could see his love for his craft in the countless number of planters and hanging baskets that he created, which spread joy and happiness to those who sought his work. When the business started doing a haunted experience, Bob let his creativity shine through in different ways, helping create sets and even participating as a haunter.

Even with Bob’s declining health, he still chose to show up at the Garden Center day after day.  This was his happy place and his employees were his family.  His brother Frank and son Bill were critical in his care over the last year.  Their help and support will always be remembered and is very much appreciated.

A celebration of life will be held in Bob’s honor this spring at Zywiec’s Garden Center. God bless you Bob, we will miss you.
